The sprinter and the long-distance runner both need talent and practice. Should one be valued over the other? To tell a short story, weaving in plot, tension and denouement in a compact form is a unique skill. But novels often hog the limelight. When many novelists have also written great short stories and the works of writers like Saadat Hasan Manto or O. Henry are literary classics, why this unfair treatment? Hopefully, the tide is turning; our panelist Jayant Kaikini, winner of the DSC prize for his short stories being a great example.
