Many people know about the influence of fossil fuels on climate change. But do they realise the role of farming? Policy makers talk about “urban sprawl”, or the encroachment of cities into the hinterland, but not much about agricultural sprawl, which has denuded habitats, such as forests and savannah lands. Just the area on which farm animals graze accounts for nearly a third of the earth’s land surface. Monbiot argues that in order to combat the climate crisis and feed a growing number of people, we urgently need to make food more efficiently, in ecologically sound ways, and free up land.
