Sultan Padamsee Playwriting Award 2020

Readings and a conversation with the four short listed playwrights – Mashuq Deen, Prashanth Nair, Radha Menon, Ram Ganesh Kamatham and Ayesha Sayani as the chair.

Initiated in 1966 by Theatre Group Bombay, and named after their founder, the Sultan Padamsee Playwriting Awards have been among the most prestigious for English language dramatists in India. Past winners have included Gurcharan Das‘s Larins Saheb, Geive Patel’s Princes, Dina Mehta’s The Myth Maker, Cyrus Mistry’s Doongaji House, Ram Ganesh Kamatham’s Ultimate Kurukshetra, Vineet Bhalla’s A Farming Story, Ramneek Singh’s Parvati’s Dark Children, Satinder Chohan’s Lotus Beauty, Faezeh Jalali’s Shikhandi – The Story of the Inbetweens, Sneh Sapru’s Hello Farmaish, Bettina Gracias’s Watching You, Shiv Tandan’s A Fistful of Rupees and Riti Sachdeva’s Parts of Parts and Stitches. Since 2016, the biennial competition has been in partnership with Tata Literature Live! Of the 104 entries this year, the jury of Benjamin Gillani, Deepa Gahlot and Arghya Lahiri, shortlisted four plays:

-Undaunted by Ram Ganesh Kamatham
-The Shaking Earth by Mashuq Mushtaq Deen
-Rukmini’s Gold by Radha Menon
-Freeing Frankenstein by Prashanth Nair
-Come see excerpts from the plays, and meet these incredibly talented playwrights.

The winners will be announced live at the Tata Literature Live! 2020 Awards Ceremony on Sunday, 22nd November, 2020, at 8:30pm.

Prashanth Nair

Prashanth Nair has had twelve years of diverse work in theatre. He is  the co-founder and artistic director of the Bangalore theatre company Tahattoa.

Ram Ganesh Kamatham

Ram Ganesh Kamatham is a Bangalore-based playwright who has written for stage, film, and radio. He has won the Charles Wallace India Trust Award, and was a grantee of the India Foundation for the Arts in 2014 & 2019.

Mashuq Mushtaq Deen

Mashuq Mushtaq Deen is an award-winning playwright and author, whose work is being taught at several universities.

Radha S. Menon

Recipient of the City of Hamilton 2020 Arts Innovation Award & 2016 Theatre Award, animal fanatic and multidisciplinary artist, Menon began performing in her youth.

Ayesha Sayani

Pooh Siraj-Ayesha Sayani has made a series of acclaimed short films, feature films,  documentaries, and advertising films.  She has won multiple awards for her work. She has also served on national and international juries & selection committees. She runs The Sultan Padamsee Awards For Playwrighting which is open to Indian playwrights from all over the world.
