From East to West, a wave of populism, nationalism, call it what you will, seems to be engulfing the world. Is this the legitimate rise of the citizenry that has been ignored and is rightly claiming its voice, or is it the cynical manipulation of divisive instincts by charismatic politicians furthering their own agendas on the shoulders of those who feel dispossessed? Why should the majority not win? But have they really been losing all these years? And where there is a majority there is, de facto, a minority. Should it have no say? Is majority/minority a good way to frame the questions facing society? Are there no other, perhaps better, formulations?
