Their searing books lay bare the violence and horror of the caste system, whose grip on Indian society persists into the new millennium. A discussion on the potential of these works to stimulate social change.

Manoranjan Byapari taught himself to read and write at the age of 24 and has authored several books in Bengali, which have been translated into many languages. He is a member of the Bengal Legislative Assembly
