Indian history writing has weighed heavily in favour of north Indian histories. Colonial history has weighed heavily in favour of the nationalist movement and ignored the role of Indian rulers. Two books seek to redress that balance: one focusses on the fascinating and constantly shifting dynamic of medieval south Indian rulers, the other explores the ways in which Indian rulers challenged the hegemony of their British masters. Both throw light on a rich tapestry of power politics that readers have rarely had a chance to glimpse.
