In India, despite modernity, women often remain socially and psychologically invisible, predominantly seen only in their relationships with men or in their roles as mother, daughter, wife, or sister. In her novel, Tomb of Sand (Ret Samadhi), author Geetanjali Shree moves an 80-year old woman’s story to centre-stage, bringing her out of the oblivion of merely being Ma or Grandma, exploring her inner narratives and desires. Geetanjali Shree and Varun Grover reflect on the insights which come about when shifting focus to examining the neglected corners and crevices in which womens’ stories live.
