Launch of Jerry Pinto’s The Education of Yuri

The Bildungsroman, a German term meaning “education-novel”, is a genre of fiction in which the central character, usually a young person, matures psychologically and morally after experiencing transformative events and relationships, good and bad. What role can a city itself play in this process? Does Mumbai lend itself to this genre because of its cosmopolitanism and diversity, which make cultural and economic difference the rule? More than other Indian cities, does it offer characters a chance for self-discovery through encounters with people very different from themselves in a variety of socio-economic settings, all bumping up against one another?
