Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is one of the most flamboyant figures of India’s freedom struggle. His military approach, vigorous convictions, risky allegiances, undoubted charisma and of course the mysterious circumstances of his disappearance and death, have resulted in a life and legacy that can never be fully labelled or laid to rest. Netaji continues to figure in modern Indian polity, especially as the nation moves towards increased nationalism, as well as in discussions of the freedom struggle. What do we make of this gutsy but complicated and possibly misguided, leader today?
