A Hippocratic oath for the 21st century might have incorporated the importance of giving patients a decent amount of consulting time, of carefully guiding them through the maze of bewildering technological and surgical options, of treating them as persons than just a conglomerate of individual body parts requiring specialised treatment, of a holistic approach to medicine. We see in many countries today doctors rushed for time, diagnostic tools overriding diagnostic skills, the fading away of the reliable family practitioner, googling patients and bridling doctors, with both chafing under the current scenario. How can the doctor-patient relationship be improved so that the duty of care is given and received in a space of sensitised conversations and trust?
